The Celtic beliefs state that up till the Middle Ages, on the eve of Samhain, fairies used to disguise as beggars and used to ask for handouts door to door. It is also believed that people who offered them food or handouts were rewarded by them and on the contrary those who denied any handouts were cursed..

Trick-or-treat resembles to the practice of fairies. As a custom, children dress up in Halloween costumes and go house to house and ask for treats in forms of candies, chocolates and even money.

The game is a question to a house owner, trick or treat? If the owner responds with treat, then he/she has to offer something to the children or else be prepared for a ‘trick’ or mischief to be played by children on the house.
